Yann Tonnar

Nosbaum Reding Projects vous invite à venir découvrir le projet photographique Stadtrand de Yann Tonnar (né en 1975). Pour cette série de photographies numériques, le réalisateur, producteur et photographe luxembourgeois a arpenté les frontières topographiques de la ville de Luxembourg à la recherche des failles dans son tissu urbain : périphéries où la nature reprend ses droits, marges où le maillage architectural semble s’effriter, lisières ayant échappé à la planification, mais aussi limites que de nouveaux chantiers de construction viennent sans cesse repousser.

De ses nombreuses excursions, il a rapporté des centaines de clichés, dont il présente ici une petite sélection. Par le regard à la fois abstrait et critique qu’elles portent sur l’environnement construit et l’empreinte de l’homme sur le paysage, ses images se situent dans la lignée des photographes de l’exposition New Topographics (1975), qui signala un tournant dans la photographie paysagère. « En suivant un parcours circulaire, je voulais que le spectateur ressente une sorte de quête », explique l’artiste. « C’est de la multitude des prises de vues et de leur organisation que naît une narration – une narration abstraite, purement visuelle, que tout un chacun est libre d’interpréter à sa manière. »

Yann Tonnar est titulaire d’un MA en Visual Culture de la Middlesex University de Londres. Après une pratique de la photographie argentique, il se consacre à la réalisation de documentaires autour de thématiques sociales et culturelles. Directeur artistique de la série routwäissgro, il est aujourd’hui à la tête de sa propre société de production, Manufactura Pictures, et préside la Lëtzebuerger Filmakademie.

Nosbaum Reding Projects is proud to present the photographic project Stadtrand (Edge of the City) by Yann Tonnar (b. 1975). For this series of digital photographs, the Luxembourg-born director, producer and photographer has hiked along the topographical boundaries of the capital to document the cracks in its seamless urban fabric: the peripheries reclaimed by nature, the margins where the architectural fabric seems to unravel, the blind spots of urban planning, but also the city boundaries that are continuously pushed back by new construction sites.

From his expansive explorations, Tonnar has brought back hundreds of photographs, from which he has made a small selection for this presentation. With their abstract yet critical view of the built environment and the human imprint on the landscape, his images stand in the tradition of the seminal New Topographics exhibition (1975), which marked a turning point in landscape photography. ‘By following a circular path, I wanted viewers to get a sense of quest’, explains the artist. ‘The variety of shots and their arrangement create a narrative – an abstract, purely visual narrative that everyone is free to interpret in their own way.’

Yann Tonnar holds an MA in Visual Culture from Middlesex University in London. After working with analog photography, he devoted himself to documentary film-making with a focus on social and cultural themes. The artistic director of the acclaimed TV series routwäissgro, he now runs his own production company, Manufactura Pictures, and serves as president of the Lëtzebuerger Filmakademie.
