“When I wrote the following pages, or rather the bulk of them, I lived alone, in the woods, a mile from any neighbor, in a house which I had built myself, on the shore of Walden Pond, in Concord, Massachusetts, and earned my living by the labor of my hands only. I lived there two years and two months. At present I am a sojourner in civilized life again.” - Henry David Thoreau, Walden or Life in the Woods, 1854
“Growing up in a rural factory town I watched my creative family extend the grind of their monotonous jobs outside the factory walls and into their lives until they were no longer capable of accessing their artistic abilities. The factory essentially divorced them from their sense of their essential selves. This wouldn’t happen to me, I thought, and moved to a large city to foster my skills as an artist and to surround myself with like-minded people. For many years this was feeling right, that I was doing exactly what I came to do, not working in the factory back home. But in 2005 when visiting my family for a reunion I listened again to their stories about the factory, and as always these stories saddened me. On the train ride home I had an epiphany that I had been treating my poetry like a factory, an assembly line, and doing so in many different ways, from how I constructed the poems, to my tabbed and sequenced folders for submissions to magazines, etc.” - CAConrad, “Introduction to (Soma)tic Poetry Rituals”, Ecodeviance, 2014
“Growing up, [Frankie] Knuckles used to think that he had two strikes against him. Like his best friend [Lawrence Philpot], he was black, and he was gay. He doesn’t think that way now, of course, but times have changed. The clubs he and Levan went to in their teens helped forge that change, giving people who lived on the margins of their own communities, let alone society as a whole, a place where – for a night at least – they could transcend everything, where they could be themselves, lose themselves.” - Sheryl Garratt, Adventures In Wonderland: A Decade of Club Culture, 1998
