Still sleepy,

Dizzy still,

Fragilely going out of dreams.

Buzzing, buzzing, buzzing.

Ringing, ringing, ringing. 

Alarm clock

Opening eye,

Then, the second one. 

The lids finally lighter.

I remember about you,

I remember about them.

Those caressing shades,

Those grazing colours.

Within the night

and day dreams.

Within the floating melodies,

mesmerising my thoughts.

Drinking the beverage.

The serendipity draining my veins.

My eyes half closed,

my nose inhaling the spices,

the captivating smells.

Chirping. Chirping. Chirping.

Honk, honk, honk.

Cars, birds and reality.

Head in a cloud,

going away.

So far.

Remembering.

How I was crying:

Sadness and melancholy.

Joy and lively emotions.

Talking about you,

talking about us.

I remember how we shared;

that nice dinner,

that nice sunset,

those nice moments.

The blue curtain, all over,

covering the sky,

absorbing our movements.

The colours of our tears,

dripping,

mixing together.

Feeling the waves,

the scent sticking to our skins.

Looking at each other,

waiting for the flux.

I remember about you.

About us and them, together.

The wind blowing through our hair.

A sharp moon rearing its head.

Going back to sleep, almost.

In your arms,

legs spread everywhere,

wrinkled sheets,

wool gathering.

Steadily, covered in the duvet.

Slowly falling. 

Together, always remember. 

William Grob
b. 1992 in the UK, lives and works in Berlin

William Grob is a self-taught painter. His personal experiences with a speech disorder during his youth inform his paintings, which depict subjects attempting to express themselves without words: ‘I was an artist before I could talk. When I was a child, I had a severe speech disorder which shaped my whole life. Art became my mother tongue, as I was using colour and form to express my happiness or frustration, which is now, subconsciously, deep-rooted into my practice. The majority of my work comes from that place. All I consciously try to create is a sense of understanding with expressions understandable to anyone.’

Grob’s unique visual perspective captures a rich array of information within the frame, offering a panoramic view into the world of the millennial generation. His work, which is based on a blend of memory and fantasy, captures scenes that feel like a lost memory remembered and encourages viewers to engage with the complexities and challenges of everyday life.

Diagonal Lovers

Diagonal Lovers is part of the ongoingseries of Lost Millennials, which explores the complexities of communication and memory. It reaches beyond the conventional idea of a generation to focus on a collective perspective on how we interact in groups and how memory changes through time. It also is imbued with a sense of hedonism marked by exaggerated scenes of day-to-day life. Grob’s paintings depict people without technology, in the rare moments when they are idle and slightly lost in their own world. They create an environment that provides the subject with the space to reflect the emptiness that comes with the overabundance of digital information: ‘The idea of finding ourselves and losing ourselves are the same thing. The creative process is both introspective and extrospective. We sometimes need the willingness to leave the paddock and our own preconceptions of ourselves behind.’

né en 1992 au Royaume-Uni, vit et travaille à Berlin

William Grob est un peintre autodidacte. Ses peintures, qui représentent des personnages tentant de s’exprimer sans mots, sont inspirées de son expérience personnelle, comme il l’explique : « J’étais un artiste avant de pouvoir parler. Enfant, j’ai souffert d’un important trouble de l’élocution qui a marqué toute ma vie. L’art est devenu ma langue maternelle, à mesure que j’utilisais les couleurs et les formes pour exprimer mon bonheur ou ma frustration. Cette expérience, désormais profondément enracinée dans ma pratique, est à l’origine de la plupart de mes œuvres. Tout ce que j’essaie consciemment de créer, je le fais au moyen d’expressions compréhensibles par tout le monde. »

La perspective unique de William Grob lui permet de concentrer un large éventail d’informations dans ses peintures, de manière à offrir une vue panoramique de l’univers des « millennials ». Son travail, qui mélange souvenirs personnels et événements imaginés, montre des scènes qui font penser à des souvenirs enfouis et encourage le spectateur à se confronter aux complexités et aux défis de la vie quotidienne.

Diagonal Lovers

Diagonal Lovers faitpartie de la série des Lost Millennials, qui s’intéresse aux rapports complexes entre communication et mémoire. Elle s’affranchit des conceptions générationnelles traditionnelles pour aboutir à une perspective collective de la manière dont nous interagissons en groupe et dont la mémoire évolue avec le temps. La série est par ailleurs imprégnée d’un sens de l’hédonisme, marqué par des scènes exagérées de la vie quotidienne. Les peintures de William Grob représentent des personnages sans technologie, dans des rares moments d’oisiveté, comme perdus dans leurs propres pensées. Les environnements dans lesquels ils évoluent offrent aux personnages l’espace nécessaire pour signifier le vide paradoxal que crée la surabondance d’informations à l’ère du numérique : « Se perdre et se trouver sont essentiellement la même chose. Le processus créatif est à la fois introspectif et extrospectif. Parfois, il nous faut avoir la volonté de quitter les chemins balisés pour nous défaire des préjugés que nous avons sur nous-mêmes. »
